Stage 04 · What Is FGM/C? · Dignity

Dignity

FGM does not define a person.

A person may be a friend, student, parent, professional, artist, athlete or anything else. A harmful practice they experienced is not their whole identity.

Teacher View
PurposeGive an accurate, calm, non-graphic understanding of FGM/C.
AskHow can we name a harmful practice clearly without reducing a person to it?
MisconceptionFGM is not medically required and does not define a person who has experienced it.
SafeguardingDo not use graphic imagery or detailed procedural descriptions in the pupil view.
Adapt / SEND–EALKeep the definition visible; let learners move through health categories one at a time.
StretchOlder learners can later access clinical classifications in an optional professional/advanced panel.
Evidence of learningLearner gives an accurate non-graphic definition and a dignity principle.
