Before You Teach

Sensitive education is safest when the safeguarding response is prepared before the first slide or question.

1. Know your organisation’s safeguarding lead, reporting route and local procedures.
2. Tell learners they will not be asked to disclose personal experiences.
3. Use fictional or provided scenarios. Do not ask pupils to investigate families, travel, communities or peers.
4. Do not promise absolute secrecy. Explain that safety concerns may need to be shared with appropriate people.
5. Do not contact or mediate with a family as a classroom response to a suspected safeguarding concern.
6. Plan accessibility: language load, SEND/EAL adaptation, keyboard access, quiet participation and an alternative to public speaking.
7. Keep Help separate from the learning task and available throughout.
