Before You Teach
Sensitive education is safest when the safeguarding response is prepared before the first slide or question.
- Know your organisation’s safeguarding lead, reporting route and local procedures.
- Tell learners they will not be asked to disclose personal experiences.
- Use fictional or provided scenarios. Do not ask pupils to investigate families, travel, communities or peers.
- Do not promise absolute secrecy. Explain that safety concerns may need to be shared with appropriate people.
- Do not contact or mediate with a family as a classroom response to a suspected safeguarding concern.
- Plan accessibility: language load, SEND/EAL adaptation, keyboard access, quiet participation and an alternative to public speaking.
- Keep Help separate from the learning task and available throughout.
